Buchner's uncompleted
manuscript tells the story of a soldier subjected to a cruel medical experiment
and betrayed by the woman he loves through a fragmentary text which shifts
location and tone quickly to keep pace with Woyzeck's rapidly shifting emotional
and physiological states. Building
upon the disjointed structure, ACTIVE EYE creates an environment of sound and
image that collide in order to lead to a final crashing together in Woyzeck's
moment of tragedy.
WOYZECK
is set in a harsh, cold environment created by designers
Takeshi Kata (Sets), Junghyun Georgia Lee (Costumes), and Matthew
Richards (Lights). Integrated
into this landscape are the piano and digital sound equipment for Rika Iino,
composer, and Ben Brown, scientist and musician, who create the
soundscape of composed and improvised sections to respond to the unique nature
of each performance. Rika Iino
incorporates bio-electric waves (or sounds drawn from the body such as heart
beats and brain waves) into her experimental piano music, creating a score that
combines melody with the rhythms of the body and the disconcerting effect of
digital alteration. These sounds
are balanced by the tightly choreographed, gesture-based acting style that draws
from East Asian performance traditions under the direction of Jyana S.
Gregory. The new adaptation
reflects the influences of the music and staging and has been translated by Lucas
Hnath.
ACTIVE EYE developed WOYZECK through a series of workshops beginning in late spring
2002 and most recently through a space grant from the Field in August 2002.
The New York premiere took place in March 2003 at the Culture
Project.
WOYZECK
is a complex, layered dramatization of a man's inner struggle refracted through
music, text, and movement, creating a vibrant, dynamic experience for the
audience.
